By Maris Book
Ellen Parker
Sire Pleasant Colony is tail-male to St. Simons Rabelais branch via *Ribots leading-sire son His Majesty. Pleasant Colony is tail-female to the Young Hag mare (Family 5-a) via Gitanilla (ARG), a half sister to Newmarket Stakes winner St. Wolf. The last place to look for Pleasant Colony is in his tail-female line!

Dam Hot Novel is tail-female to Reine-de-Course Raker (Family 1-C) via the Etoile Filante branch. Of special interest is that he is bred on the same cross as California sire Robannier. The pair share a *Ribot/Northern Dancer/Etoile Filante/Raker nexus.

Best Lines And Crosses

To use the family of *Ribot via Tofanella, look for lines of Toulouse Lautrec. The two best places to find them are via *Hawaii, and in CA, via Wing Out.

The *Alibhai line via Flower bowl will like In Excess, who has a cross of his half sister Theresina via Turkhan. Shanekite mares will also be nice for this line, since that sire had a cross of *Alibhais half brother, Karimkhan in his pedigree.

The Sunrise Flight portion of Behrens sire is easy: This is the great mare Grey Flight and she is many places: Sovereign Dancer (especially his son, Louis Quatorze who is inbred to her), Bold Lad, What a Pleasure, etc.

Pleasant Colonys own tail-female line is pretty much impossible to duplicate. A mare carrying St. Wolfe would give you a small cross, but the family is not, in my opinion, strong enough to even bother with.

A far better idea is to use the tail-female line of His Majesty (*Boudoir II). Graustark, Majestic Prince, Strawberry Road, Real Quiet, T. V. Commercialthese are but a few of the ways to go.

Maris Book is inbred to the great mare Almahmoud. This line will welcome more Northern Dancer, Halo, Danehill, Cannonade, Arctic Tern, etc.

Maris Book is tail-female to Santa Brigida and she is doubled in *Heliopolis, the family of Sir Ivor, Free House, Menow (think Tom Fool/Buckpasser), etc.

Its True and Savings are the two main names to remember if you want to inbreed to Believe Its family. But they are hard to find and I think you will be better served by looking for mares carrying daughter lines of In Reality (Cutlass Reality daughters, for instance) and just balance In Reality.

Cornish Prince contributes as his tail-male line the mare Adargatis, a three-quarter sister to *La Troienne. Most recently Adargatis has been responsible for Kentucky Derby winner Spend a Buck (whose daughters can still be found here) and champion Vindication. (Behrens dam, Hot Novel, also has a stakes-winning half brother by Spend A Buck named Makinanhonestbuck who won $362,711).

Since Spend a Buck is broodmare sire of highly-regarded Seattle Slew-line Friends Lake and Vindication is by Seattle Slew, it is clear that using Seattle Slew-line mares is highly indicated here. Other *La Troienne inbreds that will work are Woodman and Private Account.

Behrens picks up a *La Troienne cross of his own via The Axe II. Pair him especially successfully with his three-parts brother Cohoes via Saint Ballado and Devils Bag, Rahy or Singspiel-line mares.

Obviously, since Behrens is tail-female to the Raker clan, it is obvious that this family is a possible cross. Arts and Letters, Personality and Grindstone all are members of the immediate family as is Arkansas Derby winner Twist The Axe, who is a full brother to Cam Axe, the fourth dam of Behrens.

Behrens is already inbred to both Double Jay and *Ribot. The Double Jay is just about impossible to work. I wouldnt add anymore; hes not that important in pedigrees any more. But adding more Domino (his sire line) might work think Ack Ack/Broad Brush. Re the *Ribot, add more at your own risk; it could mean a temperament problem, but make sure you do it via a daughter, like with Wavering Monarch who also addresses *Boudoir II.

Finally, *Ribot in general seems to be highly comfortable with Danzig. This is could well be a speed and refining factor, but probably not a size thing. Most Pleasant Colony horses are bigger than the early *Ribots and in general are rather common-looking.

BEHRENS by Alan Porter

A multiple grade one winner of $4,563,500, Behrens is the leading money earning representative of the Ribot sire line. A remarkably sound, tough and durable runner, Behrens is by Champion Pleasant Colony, out of the speedy multiple graded stakes winning filly, Hot Novel.

Behrens has one strain of Northern Dancer, but this will be in the fifth generation of his foals, and he should be eminently suited by Northern Dancer line mares. Branches of the Northern Dancer male line which particularly appeal include Nijinsky II, his three-parts-brother The Minstrel, and their relative Storm Bird; Danzig; Dixieland Band; Deputy Minister; Nureyev; Topsider; and Sovereign Dancer.

Behrens is a complete outcross for mares descending from Mr. Prospector and his sire Raise a Native. Among the strains of Mr. Prospector which might work well here are Seeking the Gold, Woodman, Miswaki, Forty Niner, Crafty Prospector, Gulch, Kingmambo and Fappiano.

Behrens should do well with mares carrying Prince John. Sources of this strain include Stage Door Johnny, Silent Screen, and Speak John and his descendents Verbatim, Summing, Hold Your Peace, and Meadowlake.

There are also some female strains in Behren's pedigree which are particularly worth reinforcing. He a grandson of His Majesty, who is himself out of the outstanding mare, Flower Bowl. Flower Bowl is also dam of His Majesty's brother Graustark, and the brothers are both genetic relative to Majestic Light. Behren's broodmare sire, Mari's Book, is inbred to Almahmoud, and this invites Almahmoud's grandsons, Halo and Cannonade.

Behren's female line has a strong background of the La Troienne family, and he should be well suited by further strains of the War Admiral/La Troienne cross which appears in Striking, Busher, Searching, Mr. Busher and Blue Eyed Momo.
