Male
Line
Mating Recommendations
-
Though the Northern Dancer male line
is one of the two most dominant
lines in Thoroughbred history, the
Storm Bird branch is largely
represented by Storm Cat. Summer
Squall, sire of Globalize, was a
classic-winning (Preakness) half
brother to A. P. Indy from the
potent *Uvira II family. However, he
did suffer fertility issues and he
sired only 354 foals from 12 crops
prior to his death in 2009.
-
The majority of his sons reside in
regional markets like Globalize,
with his leading runner, 1999 Horse
of the Year Charismatic having been
sold to Japan. Charismatic, however,
has the good young son Sun King at
stud in Kentucky. He also appears as
broodmare sire in such horses as
champion Summer Bird.
Female Family
-
Globalize is tail-female to
Reine-de-Course *Erne and I will
make that story a part of this
report. His first dam, Sugar
Hill Chick is inbred to Reine-de-Course
Friar’s Carse via Black Carse
and Speed Boat.
-
At
present, the strongest
representative of this female
line at stud in champion
sprinter Smoke Glacken who has
sired around 7% stakes winners.
He is certainly a success and is
tail male to Mr. Prospector via
the former Maryland sire Two
Punch.
Inbreeding Opportunities
*Erne’s family pops up in
unexpected places, like Ponder’s
placement in Alydar’s pedigree.
Globalize, a good Summer Squall
runner who stands in northern
California, is also from this
family and is out of the Fit to
Fight mare Sugar Hill Chick, a
half sister to Jewel Princess’
dam Jewell Ridge.
Jewel Princess herself has had a
couple of colts, one of which,
One Nice Cat, stands in Florida.
Then there is Marco Bay, sire of
Santa Anita Derby winner
Buzzard’s Bay, who also stands
in Florida.
King Emperor appears in the
pedigree of champion sprinter
and sire Smoke Glacken and
Canadian champion Mobil, both at
stud. Then there is the Vosburg
(G1) winner Taste of Paradise
who is out of a What Luck mare.
The bottom line is that this is
a relatively easy family to
inbreed to. We are not of the
opinion that it is a sire-source
family, but neither would we
dismiss it as an unhappy mating
choice if all else in the
pedigree worked. What Luck and
Night Invader surprised a lot of
people, so with the right mare,
*Erne’s male kin can get a
runner.
However, while we think that
male members of this family can
be very good racehorses, we find
them better runners than sires.
We would prefer a female from
this line if we were looking to
buy into it – or a horse with a
cross of it, like the King
Emperor in Smoke Glacken. Real
sire-source families are few and
far between.
The Pedigree of *Erne
*Erne owns one of the most
fascinating pedigrees we have
come across in a very long time.
She is of course, tail-female to
Family 23’s taproot mare, Piping
Peg’s Dam. This family has been
very good as a Reine-de-Course
producer, also getting Two Bob
and Lou Lanier and of course we
will eventually get around to
doing Mannie Grey as well.
Like many mares of her time
(1921), she is linebred to
Pocahontas (1837) via her most
important sons – Stockwell
x6/King Tomx2 – or x8
Pocahontas. She also carries a
double of the good mare Emma via
Cotherstone and Mowerina (full
siblings by Touchstone). And
Birdcatcher x5 and his full
brother Faugh-A-Ballagh x1 are
also present.
There is then a double of
Lacerta (fourth dam of St.
Simon) via The Little Known and
Little Fairy, a double of
Diversion via Madame Eglantine
and Miami and Touchstone
x4/Jocose x2 gave her six lines
of their dam, Banter. Finally,
*Erne’s dam, Orris, is inbred to
half siblings Bonnie Scotland
and Bonny Bell (x2 Queen Mary).
As the old horseman’s saying
goes, she was “carrying quite a
load”. She figured to fit most
everything and brought
inbreeding to a wide variety of
major family lines. It is no
surprise that she continues
The Individual
-
Globalize is a rare absent
Mr. Prospector horse, which
is a big plus for him as a
breeding animal. When Mr.
Prospector is crossed on
Northern Dancer, one finds
balanced Native Dancer (Natalma/Raise
a Native) which is why it
works and has become so
prevalent. However, today
there are way too many
horses that have Mr.
Prospector and/or Raise a
Native lines repeated and
since neither was very
sound, this has contributed
to problems within the
breed. Therefore, Globalize
is fertile ground for such a
cross since he will not add
to the problem. In addition,
he has a cross of Mr.
Prospector’s family via
Judger, who is tail-female
to Frizette via a different
branch, Princess Palatine
(Elusive Quality, Ferdinand,
etc.)
-
It should here be stated,
however, that Summer Squall
was a touch on the
light-boned side. But
Globalize gets both a very
sound female family and a
super sound broodmare sire
in Handicap Triple Crown
winner Fit To Fight, one of
the best looking horses I
have ever seen, to even that
score.
-
There is not any significant
family inbreeding in
Globalize save his dam’s
double of Friar’s Carse. His
sire is inbred to
Somethingroyal via
Secretariat and Sir Gaylord.
-
Other important inbreeding
is his dam’s double of sound
but very fast Roman
(Pocahontas/Queen Hopeful)
and he has lots of Bold
Ruler via sons Secretariat
and Chieftain and daughter
Queen Empress. All were
sound and very good
racehorses.
Best Lines and Crosses
All
the same lines and crosses
listed in his first report
apply, but I will update
these a bit:
-
Miss Disco’s family is
most commonly found
these days via Cherokee
Fellow and he’s not easy
to find. But
Loser-Weeper, the only
full brother to Miss
Disco is found in Stevie
Wonderboy which of
course also has Summer
Squall! Other members of
this family tend to be
more European but the
world is getting smaller
every day so if a mare
should appear in a
catalogue that has a
cross of Fair Judgment
or Maximilian, by all
means consider her for
him.
-
The Squaw II’s family is
very good – Ack Ack, Tom
Rolfe, Sham, Alzao, etc.
Find Ack Ack largely
through Broad Brush (who
also has Tom Rolfe) and
Tom Rolfe is also found
via Forty Niner sons,
Alzao is a European and
find him largely through
mares. Sham is found in
Scrimshaw, Zavata and
Heatseeker (IRE), Hat
Trick (JPN) and Say
Florida Sandy are all
inbred to this family.
-
As mentioned above, the
Princess Palatine line
of Frizette is present
in Globalize via Judger.
Find him strongest today
in Elusive Quality and
his brother Rossini as
well as older lines like
your own Bailjumper
(think Skip Away),
Bicker, Blood Royal and
Ferdinand.
-
The Solar Display family
is, today, best found
via Alphabet Soup so
you’ll want to look for
mares by him and/or
other horses with
Battlefield lines like
Spend A Buck’s excellent
son Einstein (BRZ). Gold
Crest, Signal Tap and
Bucksplasher are quite
hard to find but might
pop up through a New
York-bred mare here or
there.
-
The Friar’s Carse line
is carried in Globalize
via Fit To Fight and
Sword Dancer. Find this
more commonly in In
Reality inbreds (and
there are a lot of
them), horses carrying
Count of Honor via
things like Bates Motel
and one day the
descendents of Horse of
the Year Rachel
Alexandra.
-
*Uvira II’s family is
one of Globalize’s
greatest strengths. All
A. P. Indys, Lemon Drop
Kid, Raja Baba (think Is
It True, Yes It’s True),
Wolfhound, Deerhound,
Plugged Nickel, Sauce
Boat (Tabasco Cat),
Brulay and when they are
old enough, the
daughters of Neko Bay.
-
The Erne family from
which Globalize hails in
tail-female is likely
best accessed carrying
any horses with Smoke
Glacken. Mares with
lines of King Emperor,
What Luck, The Irish
Lord and Alydar (who has
Ponder) are also
possible.
-
The Furlough family has
slowed to a trickle in
recent years, but
Cinegita’s kin are still
out there. Sadly,
Surfside has proved a
disappointment, largely
due to her unsound dam,
Flanders. There are a
few Unaccounted For
daughters out there, or
granddaughters now I
imagine, but they are
not plentiful.
Comments/Conclusions
-
He’s anything but
hard to breed. A. P.
Indy/Mr. Prospector
crosses are probably
his ideal but he
fits lots of things
and Lemon Drop Kid
is the reverse of
that, so it works,
too. And then
there’s Smoke
Glacken. I’d say
those three things
get you over the
hump with him.
