ELLEN
PARKER PREFERRED LINES & CROSSES
• Muqtarib is
tail-male to the prolific Mr. Prospector
branch of the *Sickle male line via
Raise A Native. His sire, Gone West, is
tail-female to the great Reine-de-Course
Aloe (responsible for Round Table, Atan
– sire of Sharpen Up -, Tale of the Cat,
Johannesburg, Minnardi, Pulpit and last
year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Distaff winner
Lahudood (GB).
• Muqtarib is tail-female to the
champion and Reine-de-Course Khara. This
is also the immediate family of the
grand sires and broodmare sires Habitat
and Northfields.
Best Lines and Crosses
• Seattle Slew is always a natural for
Mr. Prospector, as the pair when crossed
make up a minimum of x3 Frizette; x2
Humanity and x2 Lady Comfey. When Gone
West is the Mr. Prospector in question,
you also add x2 Aloe, as his female
family is the same as Round Table’s
(found as the sire of Poker, broodmare
sire of Seattle Slew).
• Falstaff is tail-female to My Sister
Kate, a full sister to Raise a Native,
the paternal grandsire of Muqtarib.
• Sharp Victor and other Sharpen Up
lines – this is the Aroma branch of
Aloe, which is the tail-female line of
Gone West. This is a different branch
than Round Table hails from, but the
same family. Known Fact, Tentam and
Garthorn are also from this family.
Sharp Victor would be particularly
potent with him as he also carries
Secretariat’s half brother, Sir Gaylord
and Victorian Heiress, who shares a
Northern Dancer-Victoriana cross with
The Minstrel.
• Besides Seattle Slew and Mr.
Prospector, Siberian Express also is
tail-female to Myrtlewood. In Excess is
the most common, but Siberian Summer
also is viable as well as any mares by
In Excess’ sons, like Indian Charlie.
Desert Secret (IRE) who was out of
Seattle Slew’s half sister, Clandestina,
is another whose daughters will fit, as
would Seattle Dancer and/or Lomond.
• Gone West carries a cross of
Secretariat as well as one of Khara, so
he is very well suited for mares
carrying Habitat (or Habitony). This
would give you a double of
Somethingroyal via Secretariat/Sir
Gaylord and a double of Khara via Little
Hut/Lodge. Another horse from this
family, Percifal, stood in California
and there might be a daughter or two of
his around. He had a Round Table cross,
too, so you’d double Aloe.
• Muqtarib/Gone West carries a Two Bob
line via double classic winner Tim Tam.
Pick this up with mares by Slewvescent
(which also obviously gives you Seattle
Slew), or Chief’s Crown (his son Bonus
Money stood in Calif.) and horses
carrying Best Turn, the best of which is
probably High Brite, all are from this
family.
• Muqtarib’s broodmare sire, The
Minstrel, is a three-quarter brother to
Nijinsky II and a full brother to Far
North. Also closely related is El Gran
Senor, sire of the fine stallion Lit De
Justice, whose daughters are a good
match for Muqtarib. Endow, who stood in
Calif., is also from this family as is
Skip Trial, sire of Skip Away.
• Bold Lad brings in a line of Grey
Flight to Muqtarib’s lineage. Pick this
up via Tossofthecoin mares, or mares
carrying Sovereign Dancer, Interco,
Sunrise Flight (think Pleasant Colony),
or Foolish Pleasure/Marfa. Louis
Quatorze brings in not only Grey Flight,
but Stavroula, a full sister to Nashua
(Mr. Prospector’s broodmare sire).
• The Northern Dancer line is known to
like a return of its blood, as in
Danehill. Thus horses carrying Halo –
Devil’s Bag, Saint Ballado, Sunday
Silence, Rahy, etc. will work or if you
are lucky enough to find something sound
carrying Arctic Tern (Bering is not the
‘something sound’ I was referring to).
• Nearctic’s blood should like a return
of T. V. Lark (his sire, Indian Hemp, is
a three-quarter brother) and
similarly-bred horses include Icecapade.
Great Nephew lines (such as found in
Political Ambition, if any are still
around) will also work.
• There is still, I imagine, quite a bit
of Flying Paster blood to be found. He
is Fleet Nasrullah line of course, via
Gummo. Draeh, the second dam of Fleet
Nasrullah, is a full sister to Occupy,
sire of Little Hut (the fourth dam of
Muqtarib). Flying Victor, like his half
brother Sharp Victor, is especially
prepotent here, giving you not only
Draeh/Occupy but also Sir
Gaylord/Secretariat and Victorian
Heiress/The Minstrel.
• Lady Juror is x3 in Muqtarib via
Sansonnet/Riot/Fair Trial. Look for more
of this potent blood in mares carrying
Son Of Briartic (Washington-breds for
the most part); Interco, Runaway Groom
and Personal Flag.
