Pedigree Report For:
Roi Charmant, 2001 c. by Evansville
Slew-Cantina by Seattle Dancer
Sire Line: Roi Charmant is
tail-male to Phalaris via the *Nasrullah
stirp, modern tail-male line of Seattle
Slew.
Evansville Slew has sired 13 crops of
457 foals, 11 of which crops are racing
age. He gets 72% starters, 54% winners,
6% stakes winner and 4% stakes placed
and moves his mares up to an AEI of 1.21
from a comparable index of 0.95, always
a good sign.
As a broodmare sire, he is just getting
started, but his first major winner is
by Holy Bull (R Betty Graybull) who has
won $209, 267. His daughters have only
72 registered foals of racing age as of
this report.
Family: Roi Charmant is
tail-female to Reine-de-Course Friar’s
Carse (Family 1-O) via the War Kilt
branch. This is the immediate family of
such important horses as Handicap Triple
Crown winner Fit To Fight; champion
Sword Dancer, sire of Damascus; major
winners Sandtrap, Cetewayo, High Cotton
and Barb’s Delight; Belmont winner Hail
To All and Japanese champion Hat Trick.
This is also the same family as current
filly sensation Rachel Alexandra.
Further, important sire In Reality is
inbred to this family via a double of
War Relic.
Roi Charmant carries a double of this
tail-female line via Anchors Ahead and
War Kilt on an 8 x 6 cross.
Inbreeding: The following
inbreeding exists in the 7+ generation
pedigree of Roi Charmant:
3
x 2 to half brothers Seattle
Slew/Seattle Dancer
x5 Frizette via Myrtlewood x3+ Black
Curl x2
Humanity/Sweetheart x3 via Case
Ace/Warrior Lass x2 (half siblings)
Lady Comfey x3 via American Flag/Blue
Swords x2 (3/4 siblings)
*Knight’s Daughter x4 via Round Table
x3/Monarchy (full siblings)
8 x 6 to full siblings Anchors Ahead/War
Kilt
7 x 6 to ¾ siblings *Foray II/*Éclair
x2 *La Troienne via x4 Baby League/Bimelech
Multiples of
various ‘standard patterns’ including
Selene (*Sickle/Hyperion/*Pharamond II);
Lavendula (*Ambiorix x2/*Source Sucree
x2/*My Babu); Mumtaz Mahal (*Nasrullah,
*Royal Charger, *Mahmoud, etc.)
Overall Pedigree: When you like
the tail-male, the tail-female and the
inbreeding in-between, you like the
pedigree – and I do. It’s delicious and
has few flaws.
There are, however, a handful of week
lines like *Sea Bird and Bronze Babu,
but few pedigrees are perfect. And he
does have rather more stamina than it
appears at first blush with Round Table
x3/Monarchy. If you breed him to raw
speed, you may get all the best of Slew
and Fappiano, otherwise you may get
grass horses who want to go long and
that’s not going to be popular, so look
for mares whose pedigrees have some
lick, preferably without also having Mr.
Prospector so as to avoid that problem
double.
Assets/Liabilities:
Assets - One of the things I like
best about this horse is how well he
will fit the daughters of three of your
existing sires: Globalize and Siberian
Summer.
Globalize gives you a cross of full
sisters Sequoia/How via Big Brave and
Chieftain; a cross of half siblings
Noble Impulse and Missy Baba (x2 *Uvira
II); and he is inbred to Friar’s Carse
via full sisters Anchors Ahead and War
Kilt, to which Globalize adds their half
sister Black Carse.
Siberian Summer gives you a fourth line
of Myrtlewood. His sire, Siberian
Express, tails to her as do Seattle
Slew, Seattle Dancer and Mr. Prospector.
He also adds a War Relic cross to Roi
Charmant’s double of his full sisters
War Kilt and Anchors Ahead. Caro, the
tail-male line of Siberian Summer, is a
very strong aspect crossed over both
Round Table and Mr. Prospector, which
Roi Charmant has strong aspects of in
his pedigree. There is also a cross of
full sisters How and Sequoia, this time
via Tom Rolfe and Big Brave.
For today’s racing, 27 starts isn’t bad
and this horse had ample speed, never
winning over more than seven furlongs.
Other Major Fits: Avoiding extra
crosses of Raise a Native whenever
possible look for mares carrying the
following lines:
Fappiano’s tail-female line of
Marguerite de Valois via Ogygian, Honour
and Glory and Lord Gaylord/Lord Avie.
As noted above, you can add extra *The
Squaw II (which he carries via Big
Brave) via mares carrying major conduits
Ack Ack, Tom Rolfe, Chieftain and Sham.
Young Kentucky sire Hat Trick, which
carries a double of this line via Lost
Code plus Halo blood, will be ideal when
his daughters are old enough.
The Rush Box line (tail-female family of
Slew City Slew) is the same as Kingmambo.
However, that adds back a Mr. Prospector
cross. Better to stick with other lines
from this family like Zein, offspring of
Yogya, anything from Capichi’s immediate
family; City Dance, a full sister to
Slew City Slew; Native Born (Washington-breds
should have a lot of him); Peteski (this
adds another Raise a Native line, but
it’s via the tough Affirmed); and
Restless Native (think Restless Con).
Topsider is from *Rough Shod II’s
family: He is closely related,
therefore, to Nureyev and Sadler’s
Wells. This is also the immediate family
of Apalachee, King Pellinore, Ridan, Lt.
Stevens (think Lear Fan), etc. Mares
carrying these lines, especially Mingun
(by A. P. Indy out of Miesque and thus
carrying Rush Box as well as Nureyev)
would be wonderful. Nureyev is the sire
of Timely Reserve from his immediate
family, she dam of graded stakes winner
Sandtrap (by Irish River).
*Khaled’s blood on the bottom suggests
Blushing Groom, Mill Reef and Track
Medal blood – think Basket Weave from
Washington state.
Nijinsky II’s family is a good one and
has most recently produced Rags to
Riches. His three-quarter brother The
Minstrel should work well here and Storm
Bird is also closely related to Nijinsky
II, sharing Northern Dancer/Bull
Page/Omaha-Flares lines.
Grey Flight’s blood in Slew City Slew
via Misty Morn is always nice. Find her
in multiple places, most easily accessed
by Louis Quatorze and his young son
Repent, Pleasant Colony (which might be
too stout unless supported by a very
smart dam who ran well at two), etc.
Miswaki also got a fine horse from the
immediate family in Now Listen, but
using him would add an extra line of Mr.
Prospector. However, High Brite is from
the same family as Miswaki, so he is an
option.
From a sampling of the best of
Evansville Slew’s get, two major winners
are inbred to *The Squaw II (as with
Globalize, etc. above): March Magic, a
G2 winner who is G1 placed and $336,751
Southeastern (LA) stakes winner
Smalltown Slew. Cherylville Slew, who
won almost $330K on the Texas/OK
circuit, was inbred to Marguerite de
Valois (as suggested above with Ogygian,
Honour and Glory and Lord Avie) as well
as to Grey Flight (i.e. Louis Quatorze).
Aqueduct stakes winner Dill Or No Dill
had a dam who was inbred to Almahmoud
(as with using Halo).
Recommendation: A very nice horse
with a versatile pedigree. I sincerely
hope he does well for you.
