Sea Of Secrets is tail-male to
Phalaris via Northern Dancer’s
prolific Storm Bird/Storm Cat stirp.
Storm Bird is closely related to
British Triple Crown winner Nijinsky
II, so this is a tremendously
influential, breed-shaping lot of
Storm Cat’s remarkable tail-female
line, that of Reine-de-Course Rowes
Bud is one of the most potent in the
stud book and it includes his close
relative Royal Academy (Breeders’
Cup Mile, G1); G1 winner Crowded
House; dam Terlingua, winner of the
G2 Hollywood Lassie; What A Treat,
winner of the now G1 Alabama, and
dam of G2 Waterford Crystal Mile
winner Be My Guest; G1 Strub winner
Victory Speech; G1 Epsom Derby
winner Golden Fleece; G1 Belmont
winner Jaipur; G1 Santa Anita Derby
winner Personal Hope; Terlingua’s
full brother Pancho Villa, winner of
the G2 Bay Shore Stakes; Rare Treat,
winner of the G1 Ladies Handicap;
Encino, third in the G2 Hollywood
Juvenile plus many more too numerous
to mention. By a champion from a
family like this and a top runner to
boot, Storm Cat was tough to ignore.
All of the horses named therein
(i.e. Royal Academy, Pancho Villa,
etc.) are excellent crosses for Sea
of Secrets tails to the A5 (American
family) headed by The Kirtley Mare. In
recent years, this line is probably best
known for having produced Breeders’ Cup
Classic winner Concern by Broad Brush.
The pair shares a common ancestor in
Thora, 12th dam of Sea of Secrets and
11th of Concern.
However, other major winners are
champion filly Airman’s Guide, Snow
Ridge (G1), and Concern’s excellent dam
Fara’s Team who won the G1 Test.
Sea of Secret’s sixth dam, Iseult, won
the Acorn Stakes and his fifth Dam,
Arrogance, is a half sister to Matron
Stakes winner Merrie Lassie, second dam
of the good runner Hilarious. Another
half sister, Navigating, is the dam of
the above-referenced Airman’s Guide.
In recent years via the Solo Landing
mare Hoso (second dam of Sea Of
Secrets), this branch of the family has
enjoyed something of a revival, and has
been responsible for not only G2 winner
Hoso herself but for other group or
graded horses Raise A Prospector,
Dominique’s Joy, Wende, Love That Jazz,
Society Selection, Fight For Love,
Dancing Jon, Prospect for Love, Cindy’s
Mom and Sea of Secrets himself, which
won the G2 San Vicente Stakes.
A wide variety of stallions have been
responsible for these stakes winners,
but as one might imagine, it follows the
trend of mostly being Northern Dancer
and Mr. Prospector line horses, simply
because there are more of them.
The Individual And Overall Pedigree
An established stallion, with nine crops
of racing age, Sea of Secrets has a very
familiar-looking pedigree in that he is
a Northern Dancer line horse out of a
Mr. Prospector daughter. His pedigree
pattern shows a double of the mare
Stephanie via Stepwisely/Quickly and a
double of the closely related Flares and
Johnstown (Sir Gallahad III line over
Flambette). He is also inbred to Sun
This is the kind of horse that people
are generally attracted to, as he won
both his starts at two and was basically
at his best going less than a mile. He
only lasted 10 starts, so I would
probably be disinclined to breed unraced
or lightly raced mares to him.
His record to date as a stallion shows
him with two of his top four runners,
Secret Gypsy (Miss Utada by Rahy) and
Hayley’s Halo (Hilo Halo by Peaks and
Valleys) having Blushing Groom/Halo
These same numbers show him with 77%
starters, 56% winners, 4% stakes winners
and 3% stakes placed.
His daughters who have won stakes like
My Miss Storm Cat, dam of certain
champion My Miss Aurelia, got a fair
shot. He is the broodmare sire of two
other stakes winners, but being
broodmare sire of a two-year-old
champion (who is inbred to Mr.
Prospector by the way and has Raise a
Native x3) is a real possiblity.
He has a number of good female lines
that are ripe for the plucking here and
I think you can probably do quite a bit
Though she’s not a Reine-de-Course, I
think it might be productive to cross
him back on some Concern blood for a
soundness factor since they both tail to
Where Northern Dancer is concerned, as
we discussed above, Nijinsky II,
especially via Royal Academy, is the top
of these. California sire Candi’s Gold
was by Yukon, a Northern Dancer-line
half to Mr. Prospector (see below).
Encino also works if you can still find
Mr. Prospector’s all-inclusive presence
makes him impossible to ignore. In
Excess (via Siberian Express) and
Seattle Slew are two of the strongest
way into this line and both cross well
on Mr. Prospector and the
above-mentioned Candi’s Gold gets you
back there via his sire, Yukon.
Storm Cat’s female line is touched on
above via Royal Academy but Pancho Villa
is also a great strength here as he is a
full brother to Terlingua, dam of Storm
Cat. The Papila line is also represented
by Tiznow/Tizbud and Swing Till Dawn in
Storm Bird’s own family is best accessed
via Battlefield, and this is easiest to
find via Arts and Letters. Alphabet Soup
is a particularly good cross as his
Cozzene male line melds well with Mr.
Northern Dancer loves a return of his
family via Halo (also think Rahy as well
as tail-female relatives like Saint
Ballado or Devil’s Bag), Arctic Tern,
Proud Citizen, Maribeau and Danehill.
The Secretariat blood finds a half
brother via Somethingfabulous in
California and all horses carrying Sir
Gaylord, Cure the Blues and Swansea
(Memo) in California line are worthy
crosses back to this great foundation
His Hildene blood is best accessed via
Hill Prince, and the Good Morning line
of Victory Morn’s Morning line is found
in Mass Media and Sultry Song.
