SIBERIAN SUMMER
By Siberian Express-Mia Karina by Icecapade
Ellen Parker

• Siberian Summer is tail-male to the Grey Sovereign branch of the *Nasrullah male line via Caro. His sire, Siberian Express, classic winner of the French 2000 Guineas, is best known as the sire of In Excess (IRE), a G1 winner and sire of successful stallion Indian Charlie. Siberian Express’ greatest strength is that he is tail-female to Myrtlewood, the excellent “sire source” family that also produced Seattle Slew, Mr. Prospector, Forestry, etc. Caro, via Cozzene, With Approval and In Excess, is the best chance Grey Sovereign has of surviving the 21st century.

• Siberian Summer is tail-female to the Escutcheon branch of Affection (9-f) via Reine-de-Course Bourtai. This tail-female line has a pronounced female sex bias and as such is associated with lesser sires and better broodmares, though both sexes are equally proficient as winners. Due to his grey coat color, however, I believe that Siberian Summer is throwing to those ancestors in his pedigree from which he inherits those grey genes, rather than to his tail-female line. It is, after all, equally important to know who a horse looks like as how he is bred, thus:

• Interesting Fact: He expresses the grey coat color of both his sire (who was by the grey Caro out of a mare by the grey Warfare, he by the grey Determine); and his broodmare sire, Icecapade who was out of the grey mare Shenanigans by grey Native Dancer. One can seriously assume that he is going to throw the dominant traits of the grey relations in his pedigree rather than his (bay) bottom line, which is a good thing, for the reasons stated above.

What I find particularly interesting, however, is the number of grey sires whose daughters produced stakes horses by him: Rubiano, Incinderator, Swing Till Dawn, Northern Jove, etc. Interesting. Several horses added another cross of either grey Determine or of Warfare, broodmare sire of Siberian Express: Palmiche; Summer Wind Dancer; Russian Olive, Summer Lass.

Best Lines and Crosses

• His Myrtlewood blood via Siberian Express will like Seattle Slew or Mr. Prospector or mixtures of the two like Event of the Year, any of the popular A. P. Indys like Mineshaft, etc. Candi’s Gold’s sire, Yukon, was also tail-female to Myrtlewood and there are full siblings by Siberian Express (Summer Star and Summer Sensation) out of his daughter Candi’s Star.

• Caro blood in general likes both Mr. Prospector and Round Table, so this reinforces the Seattle Slew/Mr. Prospector mix referenced above. Summer Service is a variation on this theme, giving you Mr. Prospector and a cross of Round Table via Table Hands.

• Slew o’ Gold’s tail-female line is the same as Siberian Express’ (Bourtai), which is why many people think he failed. However when the Slew o’ Gold daughter, Truly Golden, was crossed on Siberian Summer, she produced graded stakes placed Cyber Slew who has won $410,385.

Other horses bred on a Seattle Slew-Bourtai cross include Aptitude, Thirty Six Red, Olmodavor (when his are old enough) and the dam of Stormin Fever, so all of their daughters are applicable.

• Also from the Bourtai family and uniquely suited to Siberian Summer are daughters of Big Spruce, Coastal (a half brother to Slew o’ Gold), Worldly Manner, Geri, and Meneval to mention only a few. Of special note are daughter of Country Light who was by Majestic Light from Bourtai’s clan. Majestic Light is from the same Bold Irish line as Icecapade. Inbreeding to this family got Siberian Summer’s stakes winner Scottsbluff.

• Other good sources of Bold Irish blood are Private Terms and his closely-related sons Afternoon Deelites and Soul of the Matter; Pine Bluff, Demons Begone and Fusaichi Pegasus (all descendents of Rowdy Angel); Green Forest, Bold Forbes, Coronado’s Quest (who also adds *The Squaw II and Mr. Prospector and thus who is particularly desirable); Pok Da Pok and Maria’s Mon (who has a Bold Irish/Caro cross, the reverse of Siberian Summer and who also is especially desirable).

• *The Squaw II blood is represented in Siberian Summer’s pedigree via Tom Rolfe. Match this with his half brother Chieftain (found via your Globalize for one) also via Lost Code, who has Ack Ack blood as well. Besides Tom Rolfe, Chieftain, and Ack Ack also there is Sham, which is generally harder to find but was in Defensive Play, which was a Fappiano, so that is Mr. Prospector – one of his daughters got the outstanding runner Heatseeker. Broad Brush is another who is inbred to *The Squaw II via Ack Ack and Tom Rolfe. Alzao is yet another source, though it is harder to find.

• Kong, dam of Grey Sovereign, is another source of blood and you can find his three-quarter brother, Nimbus, in the bottom half of Lost Code’s pedigree which also gives you inbreeding to *The Squaw II. Then there is the Congo cross via Rich Gift in the pedigree of Strawberry Road, so there is another source.

• Because broodmare sire Icecapade is bred on the same cross (Nearctic/Native Dancer) as Northern Dancer, some people are wont to call them three-quarter brothers, but I think it is merely that Northern Dancer mares are plentiful owing to the saturation of his blood. If a particular Northern Dancer mare happens to fit him, it is likely something else besides that sire himself in her pedigree which ‘clicks’ with Siberian Summer so I would not make a blanket statement that all Northern Dancers fit him just because he is out of an Icecapade mare.

• I would definitely say, though, that inbreeding to Determine/Warfare is a factor, so mares with extra lines of that blood (one source is Gummo) are desirable.
